Five Hours in A&E and a Very Good Sky

With the heatwave we’ve had these past few months, it’s hard to imagine autumn’s anywhere close. But after weeks of daylight breaking far too early, this morning brought official proof that the darker mornings are quietly creeping back. By this evening, nature decided to put on an absolute masterclass. No filters, zero editing, just the sky putting on a breathtaking display of fiery oranges, deep violet-pinks, and golden light that completely stopped me in my tracks.

It was a welcome pause, because to say this week has been a bit of a trial would be a massive understatement.

On Tuesday, a trapped nerve in my neck decided to completely take over my life. How I drove home was beyond me, changing gears brought me to tears each time, and I had to make the ungodly admittance to my husband that an automatic car might actually be a good idea in this sort of situation. I walked in, my eldest took one look at me, and picked his car keys up without saying a word. Five hours at the hospital later, I was sent home with extremely heavy-duty painkillers and the frustrating advice to simply “wait it out.”

I’ve been running on half-speed, half brain, ever since. My entire left arm has essentially gone on strike. I managed to completely drop a pint glass full of water purely because I tried to pick it up with my left hand, cue the lads picking up shards of glass and mopping up after me. At one point, I couldn’t even summon enough strength to open the doors inside with my left arm. Naturally, my sons have shown zero mercy, taking the absolute Michael out of me all week and declaring that old age has officially caught up with me.

Despite the clumsy left arm, the constant pain, the dull brain, and the domestic mockery, looking up at the sky tonight was a lovely reminder to slow down. The seasons are shifting, the mornings are drawing in, and even on the days when your body isn’t quite playing ball, the world still finds a way to show off.

Here’s to resting up, letting the painkillers do their job, and hopefully regaining enough left-arm strength to prove the lads wrong soon!
