Mistakes

“Mistakes are, after all, the foundations of truth, and if a man does not know what a thing is, it is at least an increase in knowledge if he knows what it is not.”

~Carl Gustav Jung

Making a mistake is perfectly human and perfectly acceptable. There is no way that you’re going to escape making mistakes in life. No matter how hard you try to be perfect and not make mistakes, you’re going to. So accept it, and give yourself a break.
Stop trying to be perfect, and stop needing to, because you can’t be perfect and you don’t need to be. If you make a mistake, realise your error, figure out what not to do or what to do next time you act, and move forward with that knowledge.

What exactly is a mistake, anyway? As defined, a mistake is “an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.” We know that a lot of mistakes are made due to lack of knowledge, but you can know that you took the best action you could, knowing what you knew at the time, and once again, give yourself a break. You did the best you could because you’re human. Being a human is what you are, and that can never be a mistake. And learning more, having more experience, and acquiring more knowledge can never be a mistake either.

Now, making the same mistake over and over; doing something you know was wrong and is wrong that has proven to be an error and expecting a better or different result; is like planning to make a purposeful mistake. Only people determined to do the wrong thing would do that, and that doesn’t qualify as a mistake. That’s a premeditated wrongful act, plain and simple. Who would make a mistake on purpose?

As a wise teacher once told me, “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, but don’t make the same mistake twice. Make a new one.” Being wiser than I once was,I would add to that advice: “Make a better or wiser mistake.” Even if that, too, turns out to be a mistake (something that turns out badly, wrong or not the way you intended) it’s a better action, with better judgment and reasoning, with more knowledge. And that cannot be a mistake. It was just something you did, thinking you’d have better results. You know to do better when you learn to do better, and then you will truly do better.

Keep improving your mistakes, and you will eventually succeed in not making many that you will regret. The biggest mistake you’ll ever make is trying to be perfect and thinking that you’ll not make mistakes, if you try hard enough not to.
And now you know better not to make that one.
